Tomorrow is Doc Brown's official first day of kindergarten. Tomorrow is my first official day teaching kindergarten. Obi Wan-da will be auditing some courses as well.
I thought I would share a few hopes and expectations before we get started. It'll be fun to look back and have official documentation of exactly which words I should eat! Based on what I've heard from other homeschooling moms here's what I expect in varying degrees:
- It will be rewarding.
- It will be hard.
- I will grow a greater understanding of my kids and a better appreciation for who they are as individuals.
- Occasionally, I will want to drop them off at the nearest public education facility or police precinct.
- It will be fun.
- It will be frustrating.
- I'm going to learn a lot.
- I'm going to feel like an idiot.
- It will be both rewarding and hard.
That's just based on the word on the street.
Here's what I'm hoping will happen: I hope that by the end of this journey my kids will have grown into a young man and woman of godly character. I hope that they will be equipped for whatever call God puts on their life and that what they learn in school will encourage them to contribute to the world with a compassionate heart and an understanding mind. I pray they will be able to discern fact from fiction and have an insatiable hunger for wisdom. And, you know, be able to pay their rent.
I would imagine a lot of mom's have similar hopes for their kids. I hope that no matter what form of education God has appointed for your kids, whether public, private or homeschool, that we get to be the moms who raise the generation that ends up turning the world right side up. That would be pretty cool.
I've gotta run and finish up some last minute plans for tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes!
